Surgeons disappointed with F-D-A's rejection of silicone breast implants

Washington-AP -- Some surgeons are disappointed with the federal decision to keep silicone breast implants off the market.

The Food and Drug Administration rejected advice from its own scientific advisers and decided against lifting the ban on sales.

The president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons insists the silicone gel breast implants have value. Rod Rorich (ROH'-rihk) says that's especially true for women who want reconstructive surgery after breast cancer.

A plastic surgeon at New York University's Medical Center says some patients have few alternatives. And Doctor Nolan Karp adds he's used these gel implants in the past with no problems.

Still there are critics.
